Collector's Choice - Mark Hinchliffe

Every month we invite a prominent collector to recommend three pieces selected from the PROJECT PAPYROPHILIA inventory. We are delighted to introduce Mark Hinchliffe: Hi Mark, when did you get into collecting initially and how did it come about?  From a young age I had an inquisitive mind. After finding an ammonite fossil on the beach in Whitby, a curiosity of how it was made and where it came from led me to collecting natural mineral specimens. Art for me is a fix, and many of the works I collect cross reference points of history, art history, literature and many other things. Many collectors only collect one theme - English painting, ceramics etc. - but I collect anything that takes...

Curator's Choice - Zavier Ellis

Every month project curator Zavier Ellis recommends three pieces from the PROJECT PAPYROPHILIA inventory:  Zavier, how did you make your selection? Before I think or assess or research I always go with instinct first. Who did you go for and why these artists? Three artists who do very different things, but who all evoke my Romantic spirit: Graham Dolphin, Jo Dumpleton, Simon Keenleyside. OK, tell me a bit about each selection starting with Graham Dolphin: I’ve known Graham’s work a long time and have really enjoyed working with him throughout this project. The use of text is an ongoing obsession of mine and Graham keeps inventing new ways of working with it. I was quite stunned when I saw images...

Featured Artist - Simon Keenleyside

We asked Featured Artist Simon Keenleyside to expand on his practice: Hi Simon, you emphasise that you work in the British landscape tradition, and specifically you make work based on your local area in Essex, but to me they are universal. Is there a correlation between the local and the universal to you? By invoking the British I’m pertaining to our love affair with the landscape and its continued importance within our cultural history, from its industrialisation to our need of seeking out the picturesque. For me it’s important that the work has roots and that my chosen landscapes are spaces I’ve experienced and have a deeper understanding of. That then enables me to re-explore them at a distance and through...

Collector's Choice - Werner Grub

Every month we invite a prominent collector to recommend three pieces selected from the PROJECT PAPYROPHILIA inventory. We are delighted to introduce Werner Grub: Hi Werner, how did you get into collecting initially? From childhood onwards I was always fascinated by the beauty of design, craft and the expression of the unseen, unknown or the opening of new ways. I loved to meet creative and artistic people who had a different way of looking at the world. From there it is a short journey to start buying a small piece or two. You can immerse yourself in a new paradigm which keeps challenging your views and feeds your imagination. You lived and worked in Frankfurt for some time. Having a...

Curator's Choice - Zavier Ellis

Every month project curator Zavier Ellis recommends three pieces from the PROJECT PAPYROPHILIA inventory:  Zavier, was it a tough choice? That is a big understatement considering I am a huge fan of all of these artists, work with them all, represent some of them and have most of them in my collection! Who did you go for and why these artists? I’ve gone solely on instinctive personal impact and I’ve chosen Richard Moon, Alex Gene Morrison and Dominic Shepherd. OK, tell me a bit about each selection starting with Richard Moon: This is the second scissor drawing I’ve seen by Richard and both of them really intrigue me. Richard has wonderful technique and fascinating subject matter. There is always inevitably...
